Confined Space Awareness

Course Length:  2 hours

CFR Reference:  29 CFR 1910.146(g)

Overview:  The employer will provide training to employees so that they acquire the understanding, knowledge, and skills necessary for the safe performance of duties.

Employees must be trained when first assigned to duties in and around permit spaces; before there is a change in assigned duties; whenever there is a change in operations that presents a hazard; and whenever the permit-space entry procedures change.

Certification of such training must be available for inspection by employees or their authorized representatives.

Course Required by:  OSHA

Prerequisites:  None required.

Course Objectives:  Upon completion of this training the student will be familiar with:

1. Identify types of hazards in confined spaces.
2. Define the terms oxygen deficiency versus oxygen enrichment.
3. Recognize the concept of lower and upper flammable limits
4. State one example of an engulfment hazards
5. Identify confined space hazards such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide toxins
6. List at least three additional confined space hazards from the following (noise, fall protection, heat, cold, housekeeping, and respiratory protection)
7. Define the difference between non-permit and permit entry confined spaces
8. Describe the importance of following confined space rescue procedures

Written Exam:  SMS requires a minimum score of 70%. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.
