Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)

Course Length:  2 hours

CFR Reference:  29 CFR 1910: SUBPART "S", 29 CFR 1926 SUBPART "K"

Overview:  This is a complete training course that meets the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) criteria for exposure to Hydrogen Sulfide. It further meets the Occupational and Health Administration (OSHA) standard 29CFR 1910.134 which is designed to protect personnel against the inhalation of harmful air contaminants.

Specifically the Hydrogen Sulfide training is to familiarize the employee with governmental regulations affecting H2S operation. It will provide each student with the skills to recognize, detect, and use the proper safety equipment should an H2S incident emerge. These objectives will be accomplished by a pre-test, a practice session and a post-test for understanding a competency. This course of instruction and training will provide the answer to this question -- "Can I work safely in a H2S Environment?"

Course Required by:  OSHA

Course Objectives:  Upon completion of this training the student will be familiar with:
· Definition, characteristics, physical and chemical properties of H2S
· Properties of Carbon Dioxide
· Properties of Sulfur Dioxide
· The three sources of H2S; oil and gas industry, man made, and natural.
· Sources of entry, by inhalation, ingestion, skin penetration (injection), and absorption
· Recognition of symptoms and the individual and special problems from H2S
· Toxic effects and subjective order responses to H2S
· Toxicity of various other gases and the effects of H2S on metal
· Detection and monitoring of H2S incidents and how to use personal monitoring equipment
· Advantages and disadvantages of the personal monitoring equipment
· Emergency procedures for H2S conditions and alarm levels
· First Aid and rescue procedures for H2S contamination
· Proper use of equipment, the different types of respirators, donning and fit test (face fit and special problems)
· Safe Inspection, sanitation and storage techniques for handling H2S
· Job specific application; such as customer requirements and visual awareness


Written Exam:  SMS requires a minimum score of 70%. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.
Each student will be required to put on a full SCBA unit.


Retraining:  Student is responsible for retraining every year.
