First Responder Course

Overview:  The first responder program is designed to teach basic life saving skills to laypersons who do not have a paramedic on site or who may have a delayed response time of the medic due to large industrial sites or remote locations.

Course Required by:  This course is not mandated by any regulatory agency but highly recommended in the industrial or offshore environment.

Course Objectives:  Upon completion of this training the student will be familiar with:
• Performing CPR
• Utilizing an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
• Managing airway problems
• Using oxygen delivery devices and applying oxygen
• Monitoring blood pressure and vital signs
• Performing initial patient assessment and ongoing assessment until advances care arrives
• Basic fundamental documentation of emergency medical care.
• Managing bleeding emergencies and splinting potential fractures and related injuries

Written Exam:  American Heart health care provider exam requires a minimum passing score of 84%. First responder final exam minimum passing score 74%.
Performance skills such as CPR, AED, bag valve mask, patient assessment, oxygen administration, soft tissue injury and airway management will need to be performed to complete the program.

Persons with physical limitations are not encouraged to participate but exceptions can be made due to certain circumstances. Ambulance rotations are voluntary and it is done locally only if slots are available. The rides consist of a 5 hour ride along on the ambulance in the pre-hospital environment.

Retraining:  Bi-Annual refresher training is required, which consists of a 3 day class, if not beyond the accepted grace period. If the grace period is not met they will need the initial 5 day course.
