Providing Offshore Paramedics to the Gulf of Mexico and International Locations.
SMS delivers not only competent medical personnel, but personnel that become an intricate part of your work force. They provide other services that further contribute to safety, health, and operational efficiency, such as:

  • Monitoring compliance with MMS and Coast Guard regulations
  • Conducting safety and Pre Coast Guard inspections
  • Participation in safety meetings
  • Participating in lifeboat, fire, and evacuation drills
  • Inspecting and maintaining first aid stations
  • Providing training in accident prevention, first aid, and CPR
  • Maintaining the infirmary
  • Conducting fire inspection
  • Coordinating emergency evacuations
The primary function of this cooperative effort is to assure a safe and efficient operational environment. It is our intention to limit the extent of lost time injuries and maximize recovery through rapid, on-scene intervention.

Offshore Paramedics "Expanded Scope"
To better prepare our Paramedics to function effectively in remote locations, Safety Management Systems provides Medical Care Person in Charge (MCPIC) course to all of it's staff.  MCPIC is a 45 hour course designed to broaden the physical assessment skills of the Paramedic to effectively evaluate nonemergency complaints and properly relay findings to our in-house Medical Director to recommend a course of treatment.  The focus is to educate the paramedic's in identifying abnormalities, and then be the "eyes and hands" of the physician.
The duties and clinical scope of practice of the contract paramedic have been expanded to meet the changing needs of the oil industry. Saving lives and providing expert care for the sick or injured remains the key thrust of the operation.

Dr. Donald Thibodaux, Medical Director

Dr. Donald Thibodaux graduated from Nicholls State University with a BS in Chemistry in 1976. He then attended medical school at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans and graduated in 1979. Thibodaux completed his Emergency Medicine residency in 1982 from Charity Hospital at New Orleans. For the next 20 years he practiced hospital based Emergency Medicine in Houma Louisiana. "I enjoyed the challenge and responsibility associated with my specialty."
"For the last 6 years I have been the Medical Director of SMS. I love this job! It is clinical medicine at its best. As a team, the paramedic and I assess situations on remote locations. We take a history from the patient, perform a physical exam, discuss the case, make a diagnosis, and develop a treatment plan. The challenges that we face, is what makes the job so rewarding."

Nationally Registered Paramedics
The training level of Paramedics is the highest pre-hospital emergency medical care certification attainable.  There are about 1,000 hours in clinical didactic course work beyond the previous levels of EMT training.  These skills advanced emergency care providers specialize in the advanced management of patients in acute and critical situations.  The Paramedic's skills include, but are not limited to, cardiac monitoring and EKG interpretation, external cardiac pacing, defibrillation and cardioversion, intraveneous therapy, intravenous and parenteral drug administration, thrombolytic therapy, and advanced airway management to include endotracheal intubation, obturator airways, emergency cricothirotomy, and chest decompression.  The Paramedic has broad-based knowledge of human systems, anatomy and physiology, emergency pharmacology, psychiatric crises, hazardous materials, and medical/legal documentation.
