Bloodborne Pathogens Course Length: 2 hours

Overview: Employers will ensure that all employees with occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, Hepatitis B or other potentially infectious materials participate in a training program which must be provided at no cost to the employee and during working hours.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this training the student will be familiar with: • Epidemiology and symptoms of bloodborne diseases • The modes of transmission of bloodborne pathogens • The employer's exposure control plan and the means by which the employee can obtain a copy of the written plan • Appropriate methods for recognizing tasks and other activities that may involve exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials • Use and limitations of methods that will prevent or reduce exposure including appropriate engineering controls, work practices, and person protective equipment • Information on the hepatitis B vaccine, including information on its efficacy, safety, method of administration, the benefits of being vaccinated and that it will be offered free of charge • The regulatory text of the standard and its contents • Information on the appropriate actions to take and persons to contact in an emergency involving blood or other potentially infectious materials • The procedure to follow if an exposure incident occurs, including the method of reporting the incident and the medical follow-up that will be made available • Information on the post-exposure evaluation and follow-up that the employer is required to provide for the employee following an exposure incident
Employees in HIV and HBV laboratories and production facilities will receive the following initial training in addition to the above objectives: The employer will assure that employees demonstrate proficiency in standard microbiological practices and techniques and in the practices and operations specific to the facility before being allowed to work with HIV or HBV.
The employer will assure that employees have prior experience in the handling of human pathogens or tissue cultures before working with HIV or HBV.
The employer will provide a training program to employees who have no prior experience in handling human pathogens. Initial work activities will not include the handling of infectious agents. A progression of work activities will be assigned as techniques are learned and proficiency is developed. The employer shall assure that employees participate in work activities involving infectious agents only after proficiency has been demonstrated.
Written Exam: SMS requires a minimum score of 70%. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.
Retraining: Annual training is required and will be provided within one year of the student's previous training. Employers will provide additional training thereafter. → Back to course listing
